Giving Directions

In this developed version of ALIBI, students play the roles of suspects in a murder mystery, except in this version, there is an actual murderer. You will distribute these character cards (7) to students, and have the rest play police officers. The characters can spend 10 minutes socializing and interacting with each other, while the police officers prepare questions for the investigation (they'll be briefed about the main plot).

After, you can start the interrogation whichever way you'd like (characters interrogated in isolation, or do it as a speed-dating style, each character interviewed by an officer across the class).
Tips: students should not share the "secrets" in their cards (only if absolutely necessary), they also have the freedom to make up additional details about their characters when convenient.

Murder Mystery (Clue Game)

Lesson Overview



This ESL digital marketing lesson starts off with a fun definition exercise, which is accompanied by some questions. Next, they have to complete a speaking task, where they discuss four real advertisements. As they are given the images, there are a series of questions too.



Following that, there are a series of detailed exercises related to the video. Students have to complete a vocabulary exercise at the beginning of the section which is related to the type of digital marketing that is being discussed. The sections include; content marketing, SEO, pay per click, social media and email. The vocabulary task includes; synonyms, definitions, opposites and sentence completion.



Then, there are four case studies which double as a reading and critical thinking exercise. Students read about businesses before deciding which type of marketing applies to them. Afterwards, there is a grammar exercise that focuses on ‘reported speech’. The lesson finishes with a list of fun questions about advertising.



Homework



This ESL digital marketing lesson plan is complete with a superb homework task where students are tasked with reading an article, before having to write questions related to the reading task. Also, participants have to complete an ‘affiliate’ marketing task, which is complete with a vocabulary and writing activity. The homework ensures that students continue to study and solidify their learning in their free time.

Digital Marketing - ESL Pals

This is a group activity. First it is a "read and run" dictation, then they solve a puzzle. 



Students can work in groups of 2-4 people. 



First  print and cut the 16 clues in large font / big strips of paper. 

Then stick the clues around the classroom (ideally using magnets). The clues should be facedown so students cannot read them from afar. 



To start, one student from each group will run to any clue. 

They read and remember the clue.

Then they return to their group and tell them what the clue said. 

The group members will write the clue. 

The students can take as many trips as needed to remember the clue, but the teacher can recommend that they try to remember half of the clue / one sentence at a time. 

The students should take care to also copy the clue number so they can keep track of what they have already written. 



Students cannot take the clue cutout back to the group! And they should not try to read across the room (some might haha). 



It's fun if the "read and run" is a race among the groups. 



Once all 16 clues are copied, the group will use the clues to fill in the table. 

Most clues are straightforward but some will require logical deductions. 

At the end, 1 box in the table will remain empty, and that will be the answer to the puzzle question. 





Of course, teachers can opt to do the logic puzzle only, where they skip the "read and run" and simply give the students the handout with the clues and students solve the puzzle.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Explicit language. A video based activity for adults from lower-intermediate up. Open questionnaire, that you can change to a quiz using the key provided. Watch the video before presenting it to your students. It contains two f-words and may not be suitable for all your groups. I had this activity with adult groups in two different schools in China. They all accepted my warning and the explanation, that we cannot avoid some words we come across as language learners/users.

Natural Disasters

Native English speakers love to slip them into conversations, and you'll come across them often in books, TV series, and movies. To perfect your English, you need to use idioms with confidence and know the difference between "breaking a leg" and "pulling someone's leg."





1. Under the weather

What does it mean? To feel sick or unwell.



How is it used? We, English love, talk about the weather and do it very often, but don't let this common phrase fool you. If someone tells you they are feeling under the weather, your response should be, "I hope you get better," not "Do you want me to leave you my umbrella."



2. The ball is in your court

What does this mean? It's up to you



How do you use it? Now it's your turn to make a move, but this idiom refers more to life than to a sport. If you've got the ball, the decision is yours, and someone is waiting for you to make up your mind.



3. Break a leg

It means to wish someone luck.



How is it used? This idiom is not at all threatening. Often accompanied by a thumbs-up gesture, "Break a leg!" is a way of cheering someone up by wishing them luck. The expression has to do with the bows that theater actors take at the end of the play. If the performance is a success, they will have to bow so much that they might break a leg.



5. Pull someone's leg

It means to make a bad joke.



How is it used? All fans should learn this phrase of practical jokes. "Pull their leg" is similar to "wind someone up." In context: "Relax, I'm just pulling your leg!" or "Wait, are you pulling my leg?".



6. Through thick and thin

It means to be loyal in all circumstances.



How is it used? Often used to refer to family or a partner, "through thick and thin" means that you will support the other person no matter what, in good times and bad.



7. Once in a blue moon

It means rarely

8. It's the best thing since sliced bread

It means it's very, very good.



How is it used? Sliced bread must have been a revolution in England because since then, it has been used as the definitive reference for all things fabulous. We love it as much as we love tea.



9. Take it with a pinch of salt

It means don't take it too seriously.



How to use: "I heard that elephants can fly now, but Sam often makes up stories, so I take everything he says with a pinch of salt".



10. Go down in flames

It means to fail miserably.



How is it used? This phrase is quite obvious: "That exam went down in flames. I should have learned my English idioms."



11. You can say that again

It means that's true.



How is it used? It is usually exclaimed to say that you agree with something. When a friend says, "Ryan Reynolds is gorgeous!", you can reply, "You can say that again!".



12. Jump on the bandwagon

It means to follow a fashion.



How is it used? When someone starts doing something because it is fashionable or does it just because it looks good. An example related to brunch: "She doesn't even like avocado on toast. She's just jumping on the bandwagon".



13. Hit the sack

It means to go to bed.



How to use it? This idiom is straightforward to learn. I'm exhausted, and it's time for me to hit the sack!".



14. Miss the boat

It means it's too late.



How do you use it? Use it when you miss an opportunity or a deadline. "I forgot to apply for that study abroad program; now I've missed the boat".



15. By the skin of your teeth

What does it mean? Hardly



How do you use it: "Phew, I passed that exam by the skin of my teeth! I hope you pass your exams, but if you only give them by the skin of your teeth, you can use this expression.

15 English idioms everyone should know

International Women's Day is an interactive lesson based on a short video. Its aim is to generate a discussion about IWD and its relevance today. Students also work on their listening skills and vocabulary. The lesson is designed for B2+ / C1 learners.

The lessons begins with students answering some questions about IWM.
This is followed by a flexistage where less advanced groups can analyse the vocab from the listening in the next stage.
Listening stage 1:
Students define two terms from the listening. Then they listen to the first part and check the answers.
Listening stage 2:
Students are given a number of milestones and events in women's suffrage and try to match them with the dates. This might be done individually or in pairs. Students listen to the second part and check their answers. More advanced groups might not be given the dates and, instead, could be asked to provide them based on the listening.
Listening stage 3:
This stage is quite generic. Students answer three questions in pairs and then listen to the last part. They compare their own  answers with those from the video.
If there is time left, ss might answer a few more questions about IWD.
