The Doctor and the Patient

This Resource includes an almost complete list of the possible expressions and questions used at the doctors office between the doctor, the receptionist, and the patient. It includes useful language for reserving an appointment, talking about your symptoms to the doctor, receiving treatment or advice from the doctor, receiving prescriptions, and more. This list could be used for various class activities like Speaking drills, role-play activities, writing dialogues, or scripts. And is rather useful for those who aim to improve their day-to-day conversations in English.

A game to practise the conditional and reported speech. A good activity to open a group up and have some fun in the class.

1.Provoke a fun and light hearted conversation in the classroom.

2.Conditional Type II

The doctor must use the conditional type II as mush as possible with phrases such as:

I think you should … if you were a dog, you would …

3.Reported speech

The patient will practice reported speech when they report back to the class about the advice the doctor has given them.

Procedure



1.Cut out the situation cards.

2.Cut out the top half of first page and give out.

3.Split the class into groups of two.

4.Talk about the joke.

5.Go over any relevant vocabulary.

6.Explain the role play situation to them.

7.Tell each group who is the doctor and patient.

8.Give the patient one card face-down.

9.Give each group 5-10 minutes to develop the situation.

Note:  Try to encourage the groups to act out the role play situation as they will enjoy it much more.

10.Each patient reports to the class saying what the doctor advised them to do.

11.Change roles in each group.

12.Vote which doctor gave the best advice.



PSYCHOLOGIST'S GAME

Students must choose a given phrase that might be said in a doctor's office from a box, and sort according to who said it (Doctor or patient). Useful ESL workheet for in between introduction of vocabulary and mastery of it.

Who says it? (Going to the doctor)

This is a detailed reading comprehension worksheet to practice the different dialogues for when you are going or are at the doctor's office. It focuses on a number of common expressions and questions. It practices possible symptoms and questions. It includes 4 different dialogues all of which have custom comprehension questions to ensure the students understanding and engagement. After completion, this Worksheet could also be used to speaking drills or role-play activities amongst students. It is the ultimate lesson plan for practicing conversations for the doctor's office!

This is a script students can use involving an emergency room scenario.  One student is the patient and the other student is the ER employee/Dr. Smith.  The students then switch roles.

This video based lesson is about reviewing expressions used to talk about pain and illnesses between a patient and the doctor. It also provides expressions for giving suggestions and has many examples of YES/NO questions short and long answer questions . 

At the Doctor's office 

This file contains one page that is a doctor's one-week appointment book, and one page that is a patient's one-week appointment book. Give patient pages to half the class and doctor pages to the other half. One patient and one doctor need to role play a phone call (or in-person visit for lower-level students) to schedule a doctor visit at a mutually convenient time. This was a fun activity! Practices asking questions & scheduling-related vocabulary.

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well
