I always use this worksheet to check students' previous knowledge regarding their reading skills, some basic grammar (have/has got, to be, can, present simple) and vocabulary (food, animals, among others). 

Students read a graded version of a tale (I found it in the Internet but I couldn't find the author's name), and then they solve some reading/grammar/and speaking activities.
