This worksheet may be useful when studying the topics "Geography", "Countries", "The Definite Article with Geographical Names". The worksheet contains three exercises aimed at checking students' grammar, vocabulary and writing skills.

HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT GEOGRAPHY? (The definite article with geographical names)

This lesson is suitable to enhance pupil's listening skill by integrating Skyfall by Adele song in the lesson. It is focusing on the article-the. Firstly, teacher needs to play Skyfall song so introduce the song to the pupils. Then teacher proceed with the worksheet. Teacher needs to play the song while pupils complete the task.

The worksheet focuses on use articles with geographical names. The students discover the rules of the article use watching the video about natural wonders of the world. Students focus on the rules and examples of the article use in the names of countries, seas, oceans, and less ‘common’ cases like names of canyons, bays and waterfalls.  There are exercises for further practice: use of articles and speaking. The tasks can be used for independent studies or distance-learning classes.

This is a worksheet that I made to compliment a presentation about the usage of the definite article or its omittance. A2 students may find this a little bit challenging so I recommend that they work in groups to complete it and that they use dictionaries where needed. The answers can be found on the second page. 

Definite Article or Zero Article Sentence Unscramble

By writing and performing short dialogues, adults and teens can practice using count and noncount (uncountable) nouns with definite and indefinite articles.   Students could write these dialogues alone or in pairs. Teachers should focus only on the correct use of the target grammar and vocabulary, and not worry about other errors. The important thing is that students use the vocabulary in grammar in a meaningful way, and their errors do not impede communication.  


This activity has been used effectively in ESL 2 (high beginning) with middle and high school students.

This exercise is designed for A2 level learners and uses simple present tense to ensure clarity and ease of understanding.

Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well
