This ESL worksheet is great for the review / practice of ordinal numbers and birthdates. Students write the answers. It can also be used to practice asking about birthdays using the target vocab. "When is Karen's birthday?". For extra points they can add their classmates to the line Who can get the most classmate's birthdays! Can you find someone else with similar birthdays? It can be a short filler or extended to include speaking. If you can create a play out of it and assign characters. It is as unlimited as your imagination. 




Ordinal Numbers - Birthdates and Months

I always enjoyed this activity but was frustrated when the students couldn't convert the statements into questions and would just read 'someone who likes cake?!' to which the other student would say 'yes'. This way they know what the question should be and then can provide the answers in the third person when you ask them what they found out. 

Find Someone Who

These are like the flash cards I put up before, but they are smaller and used for a different game. This is a speaking/matching game, so only print one set. The aim of this game is to practice vocabulary. These cards are made specifically for Japanese STS, but the cards are fully editable so you can replace the Japanese with whatever language is useful to you. Every ST will receive ONE card. The point is for each student to find the match to their card, showing comprehension. The STS walk around and find a partner. They rock, paper, scissors to see who will ask the question. The speaker will ask "Are you a month?" or "Are you a day?". The STS must answer "Yes, I am." or "No, I am a month/day." If the answer is "yes", the speaker then asks "Are you _____ (whatever is on the card)?". The STS must then answer "Yes, I am." or "No, I am not." If the answer is "yes", the STS stay paired and check with the teacher. If the answer is "no", the STS find a new partner. The size of the class controls how much vocabulary you can use, but you may have the time to do the game again with different cards/vocabulary. Also, the teacher may have to be a match for someone. This is a complete set of 38 cards. If you have more than 38 STS, maybe you can use them as pair checkers or print an additional set. I created this game because I noticed some students were still having problems remembering the English, even when asked in their own language. I made this for more practice. It was a big hit with my students screaming, "One more time." The cards are to be PRINTED ON B4 sized paper, otherwise you have to resize it. Thanks to Phillip Martin for the clipart. Find someone who

An introduction activity for the topics fitness/health/food to help students relate to these topics. It's a speaking activity, the objective is for students to get talking about the topic.

A classic "Find someone who ..." game around the topic of TV watching [with solutions]. 



I took a bunch of comments from an online forum where teens answered the question: "How much TV do you watch a day?"



The answers are neatly formatted to like like the actual comments on the net [pages 2-3]. Cut them all up, and hand them out evenly to the kids. Help them with any difficult words they are not familiar with.



Then hand out the questionnaire [page 1] with the types of people they have to find among the online respondents. They will have to walk around and ask questions from each other to be able to fill their questionnaire.
