Writing formal letters /emails

This is a sort of summary I have created for my adult/ secondary school students, using different coursebooks or examples of formal letters you can find online. You don't find any tasks here, only some suggestions about writing formal letters. 

This activity is mainly aimed at elder students, high school or grown ups. It contains an authentic letter of complaint and tasks based on it, considering defining type of the letter(that is why there's no title on the list), looking for problems and reasons for writing, and language and function work as well.

This lesson plan gives information as to how and why formal letters are written. There is an excellent example of a formal letter included after the instruction sheet. 

Writing a Formal Letter to Your MP

The worksheet focuses on writing Cover Letters. Students practice the use of prepositions and formal language in cover letters. The assignments help to develop students’ writing skills in business and professional settings. The letter uses the example of IT job application, but it can be adapted and used for other jobs.

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
