Two exercises for upper elementary students to practise the use, spelling and pronunciation of regular verbs in the past simple form. The answer key is included!!

PAST SIMPLE (REGULAR VERBS): -ED PRONUNCIATION

This worksheet is designed to practice and correct pronunciation. Read the sentences and have students  repeat contrasting  sounds, focusing on the difference in context . Some I wrote myself others are either nursery rhymes or tongue twisters.

Introduction to the IPA (Pronunciation Practice)

Difficulties in pronunciation faced by Koreans especially. This is a long explanation that might be helpful to Korean speakers about the problems with English pronunciation.

Difficulties in Pronunciation in English Explanation

A short story for the reader to practice pronouncing words spelled with -gh and pronounced as /f/, i.e. cough, laugh, etc.

GH as /f/ Sound Pronunciation Practice

This group of exercises is used to help ESL/ELA learners, with help from  a teacher, to correctly pronounce the _ed ending in regular past tense verbs. The rules for these exercises are also included.

Regular Past Tense Verbs Pronunciation Practice

Start by reviewing the 3 final 'S' sounds with examples. Then 

put students into 2 groups and give each group a chart and have them decide which 'S' sound it is. After they listen to the song and put the words in the appropriate places in the song. The song is nice and slow so it's great for your Elementary students, and you can use it with pre-int too.

Gap Fill final 's' sound pronunciation

This is the second version of the pronunciation exercise of the consonants s and th. 



Try to review the position of the tongue and mouth for these consonants first before going through all the words. Then focus one consonant at a time. After that the pairing. 



For the tongue-twister, let the student follow you and the let him/her do it by himself/herself.

Watch a short video on animals from Africa living on the savanna. Repeat the names of the animals out loud in order to practice pronunciation. Then, write the names of the animals on your worksheet.

Activity to practise the pronunciation of regular verbs in past simple. (for small groups)

1. Stick the worksheets with the different pronunciations of "ed" on 3 different walls of the class.

2. Give a copy of the worksheet of the verbs. (verbs must be previously cut)

3. Students stand up and stick the verbs on the correct pronunciation worksheet .

I like to give my students a list of words, and then ask them to classify the words according to the pronunciation. the teacher has to pronounce the words while the learners are classifying them. so, basically this is much more a listening task. then the students will draw the rules from the task. an understanding of phonetic symbols is required.

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
