Small talk

Two short conversations between two people. The students can create some new conversations about themselves. It's good to talk to other people. Hope you like it.



There are some short conversations. Students have to fill in the blanks with the correct words. The options are in a square in the low part of the worksheet. Thanks.

SMALL TALK

This is a sheet of mini subjects that you can cut up and get students to randomly pick out three or four and chat to a partner or a small group about for a few mins. Can be used as a warmer, cooler, interrupter. Generates some good language and gives you a chance to help students formulate meaningful language about things that are real for them.

Small talking points

In this activity, students will practice 3 small talk dialogues. They will also do a fill-in the blanks exercise and talk about starting and closing a conversation and being polite.

Small talk practice

NEEDS: Eraser (as game piece) and dice. This board game covers basic conversation. It can be used with highschool and adult learners. The idea of the gme is to prepare players to engage in small talk, and includes quetions like "What is migling?" and "When do we make small talk?"

Small Talk Board Game

This handout describes the process of small talk, taking a 1-2-3 approach to help our students master this skill. It's meant to be used as a class, with the teacher asking for examples of each step and writing them on the board. Then it can be used as a guide for the students as they work in pairs or small groups.

Steps to Small Talk

A map can come in handy when working with pre-intermediate students who aren't confident or lack ideas. They follow the map step by step and develop a conversation. A convesrtaion is about: meeting someone for the fist time, asking about the trip, interests, home town, etc. 

Conversation Map Small talk

Short dialogues to practice small talk with absolute beginners. Students can first read the conversations and then role-play them. They can then write their own conversations based on the samples provided. It's a speaking drill that can be used in pairs or with the whole class.

Learners taking the C1 Advanced exam should be able to: Express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts. Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
