Hey ESL Teachers!



With social isolation impacting many people across the globe, I decided to publish a lesson plan on Fluentize based on a short video about how to deal with being single and feeling lonely. One of the aims of the lesson is to help students build their language skills on the topic of mental health and lifestyle.



I would say this lesson plan is probably most suitable for pre-intermediate (A2) level students who are on the edge of intermediate (B1).

The lesson materials attached in this post include the first half of the lesson — the preview discussion material, the sections for pre-teaching the vocabulary in the video, and a listening comprehension exercise that goes along with the featured video.



You can access all the post-viewing sections when downloading it from Fluentize — including activities on a video quote, vocabulary context usage, verb forms, gerunds, follow-up conversational material, the quiz & review section, and the teacher's guide.



As you'll see in the lesson plan, students discuss being single and loneliness. They'll also learn a few special phrasal verbs and phrases such as "deal with something", "reach out for help" and "take your mind off of something". 



After watching the video and completing the first post-viewing section, there is a second post-viewing part that focuses on some grammar using gerunds based on the following quote from the video:



"Feeling lonely sometimes when you’re single is completely normal."



You can follow everything up with additional discussion material based on the following topics...



- Being introverted or extroverted

- Social life

- Learning something new

- Hobbies

- Calling friends



From the creator’s standpoint, my favorite part of the lesson is the section focusing on vocabulary context usage in the first post-viewing section, which gives students practice using the phrasal verbs mentioned above in the video context.



I also realize that many English language teachers are teaching in an online environment. For those of you who are, I recommend trying out our interactive lesson plan for it  (which is the one attached in this post), which is basically a digital version of the lesson materials that comes equipped with interactive fields for your students to write answers within.
