This is a great speaking activity to develop fluency for talking about Valentine’s day. Students take turns choosing a question to ask another student in their group. The other student must answer the question and aim to speak for at least 1 minute to ensure they get lots of speaking practice.  This task is followed by a ‘write your own Valentine’s poem’ activity.





We have a teacher’s copy (including teacher’s notes) and a student version which you can email to your class for online lessons.

Valentine's Speaking Task

In these lessons several items about Valentine's Day are dealt with to practise both skills (reading/listening/writing/speaking) and vocabulary. The file includes: thematic crossword puzzle 'love', labeling flowers and the symbolism of flowers, clip 'the history/origins of Valentine's Day', writing puns and Roses are red poems (or a parody) and reading some much appreciated love poems (R. Burns, E. Brontë, Shakespeare..) after which students express their opinion/likes/dislikes.

This worksheet is for adults and high schoolers, level B1. The students read the Valentins cards and dicuss them. Then they should write their own card to a loved one or to a friend.

I created this for a one-hour mixed-age group lesson; 7-9 year-olds. This page can be used as the last activity with a lesson about Valentine's Day vocabulary and poetry. First, you can introduce the poem "Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you!" Next you can erase the adjectives and see if they remember them (red, blue, sweet). Then, cut up the four lines of the poem and have four kids at a time come up and choose a line. They have to put themselves in order how the poem goes and then read the line they chose. 

Finally, hand out this page and ask them to write the poem on the four lines, prompted by the illustrations. Then they can color it and add their name and who they are going to give it to.

Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, using linking phrases (=words that connect ideas between sentences). Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Learners who can smoothly communicate in every walk of life, read long texts and write well

Learners taking the C2 Proficient exam should be able to:<ul><li>Understand almost everything read or heard with ease.</li><li>Summarize information from a variety of sources into a coherent presentation.</li><li>Express themselves using precise meaning in complex scenarios.</li><li>Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations</li></ul>
