An exercise to evaluate students' reading and understanding the use of silent letters in English word formations.  Some of the words used in this exercise are in gibberish, and have no meaning in English; they are used here only for the purpose of sounding in-line with the correct words.  This also checks the students' spelling abilities, and their accuracy in reading.  Mostly, this exercise comes to ensure the students' familiarity with silent letters in the English language, AFTER they have already gone over the topic learned the vocabulary.

Easy exercise for beginners to encourage them to write their own story. there is a word bank for ideas and prompts at the beginning of the sentences. Hope it's useful.

Let's write a short story

This reading comprehension gives beginners some reading practice. They first have to read the passage, then complete all the activities that follow. I hope you find it useful.

Reading Comprehension: Stuck in the Desert 

This is a short story in which many verbs in the simple past are included in order to practice them. Children then have to answer true or falso questions in order to check their understanding.

A simple past story

This is a simple writing activity aimed at Beginner/ Pre Beginner ESOL adult students. There are 5 activities (you can adapt them to your audience). They include a simple comprehension, sentence ordering, a gap fill, writing your own letter and a correction activity. This activity was created for ESOL students taking Entry 1 ESOL and Functional Skills writing exams.

Writing a letter to a friend.

There are seven colourful and fun pictures that the students are supposed to talk about the things wrong and normal in the pictures. So they can use a diverse vocabulary and structures.

What's Wrong with the Pictures? Speaking Activity

A small worksheet on the correct use of so and such. It's probably better to get them to put their pens down and tell you the answers. I sometimes play "finish the sentence" (it was so hot that ...) with them after teaching this structure. That normally helps them. Answers are at the back as always.

The objective of this worksheet is to  improve writing , reading , reading comprehension and listening. Is a reading comprehension and writing worksheet . It's a dialog between two charachters, an image and you have to draw lines, guesing the charchters name.

In the park

In this exercise, students answer the question: "Why do you go to....?" and they answer it using the infinitive of purpose (to+inf). They can ask follow-up questions if possible.

Students learn some idioms about entertainment and discuss the pictures, then they answer 20 questions about the topic. There are two additional pictures for stimulation. Enjoy!

Talking about entertainment

Good for A2 students and upwards. A good old game of battleships with a difference. You must put X´s where you want your ships, bombs, pirates to go (it tells you how many squares to cross and how many ships you can put) then just play as normal, except use the phrases in the boxes to formulate sentences. (eg. On Saturday, would you like to watch a movie...) and if it matches your square you cross it off. Once you´ve got a whole ship, you must shout "arrr me hearties!" 



So there you have it. Pirates. Battleships. Verb tenses and a great way to get students talking.
