Main grammar points to know: inversion, mixed conditionals, modals in the past, all passive forms, phrasal verbs (all patterns), wish/if only for regrets

Give and follow directions on a map

I've drawn this map a while ago in order to give my students some extra practice, and I thought I should share. There are many ways you can use it (as a conversation task or as a writing exercise, for example). I also included the cards with the names of the places in case you want to use this as a game (as I did!). Hope it's useful!

This is a speaking activity I made for a conversation class. I tried to covered as many topics as possible. On the second page there are a couple of exercises to practice places in town and prepositions, and also giving directions. There is a map of our town, we used it only as orientation, obviously we know where the places are, so you can replace it with the map of your town, with a generic one, or you can even mark some random places in mine :). I hope you like it!

AROUND TOWN

Good for partners or small groups! Students pick a start and end point, then describe how to get there using L, R, and cardinal directions. One can be a recorder, the other can be in charge of the compass (or a makeshift one by using a paper one and keeping track!).

Directions in the school - How to get from here to there

Students are stranded on a hypothetical island, and must describe it in detail and send a message in a bottle to prospective rescuers. Scaffold by giving students an island template and having them draw their island, then write a description based on the drawing.

We use the definite article in front of a noun when we believe the listener/reader knows exactly what we are referring or to mention the object again.
